There are about 2500 Polar Bears on and around Svalbard; they are totally protected and they can be very dangerous if frightened and/or hungry (click on the picture above for the best pictures and video that I've found so far).
Never go out unless you are with someone who can not run as fast as you.... :-/
More seriously, take advice before venturing out into the
wilderness and be prepared to carry a substantial weapon for your own
protection.
EISCAT currently has offices on the top floor of Svalbard Naeringsbygget in downtown Longyearbyen, almost exactly 15 km from the radar site itself, which is close to Mine 7 (at the end of the longest road on Svalbard).
